A one off treatment will kill free floating bacteria, a suitable biocide used on a continual basis will strip away biofilm, layers of bacteria that can accumulate in pipes, see below, which can harbour legionella bacteria. Biofilm is a multi layered structure in which bacteria thrive and can be a good place for legionella to grow. Biofilm can also harbour amoeba which can ingest legionella, protecting them from the effects of biocide. In this case the biocide may not work and other conventional techniques will have to be used.

If it is necessary to maintain a residual in times of high counts or system problems, the chemical can be left on site and the dosing can be undertaken by the installation of an automatic dosing system. This administers the chemical proportionally to the amount of water being used.
